Zavier Fong asked:

Choosing a binoculars can be a rather tricky task considering that there are so many kinds of binoculars out there. What do all these technical terms mean? Let’s find out.

Binoculars are great instruments that can enhance various activities such as hunting, bird watching, sports and even astronomy. In essence, a binocular takes a distant image, magnifies it through its lens, and presents that image for our viewing. All this is done while remaining small and compact enough to be carried around.

The actual architecture of most binoculars is fairly simple. The lenses positioned at the end of the barrel are often known as the objective lens. These lenses gather the light from a distant image and focus it on the lenses closest to your eyes for viewing. Binoculars are really just two mini telescopes set side by side so that viewing can be done with both eyes as opposed to just one. This helps to create a depth of field of the objects being observed a lot better than if it was a single scope.

When you choose a pair of binoculars, you’d find that there are usually two numbers used to describe them. These are often described as something like “10×50″ or something similar. Let’s translate this numbers to something more meaningful.

The first number simply refers to the magnification of the binoculars, or simply put, how many times the image is magnified. Hence, if this number is a 10, it means that the image you are seeing through the lens has been magnified 10 times its normal size.

The second number is related to the size of the objective lens at the end of the binoculars. This number is quite important to take note of because larger objective lens diameters mean that more light will be captured by the binoculars.

So how practical is all this information? Most people make the assumption that it’s best to get the highest magnification they can for their binoculars. This is not quite right. A hand-held binoculars at a high magnification tends to have too much movement for the highly-magnified image to be useful. Usually, binoculars that have anything more than 10 times magnification should be mounted on a tripod instead of being held. Hence, if you’re planning to use binoculars without a tripod, you should stay within the 4-8x magnification range.

We talked about the objective lens size of the binoculars earlier on. If the activity you plan on using your binoculars is a low light situation i.e at night or in a dimly lit situation, whether indoors or outdoors, then you’d need a larger objective lens for your binoculars. Generally speaking, 30mm and above is essential for low light situations, to ensure that you’re capturing as much light as possible.

The last thing you’d need to consider is the actual weight of the binoculars that you’re buying. For activities like hiking, or hunting, it’s probably best to acquire a pair of light weight binoculars. Plastic lenses, which weigh a lot less than their glass counterparts, may be the solution. The tradeoff is that glass lenses perform a lot better at the same cost, but are heavier and more fragile.

In summary, you’d need to consider which activities you’d most likely be using your binoculars in when choosing the right binoculars. The magnification and objective lens are key factors, but you may also consider getting water-proof ones depending on your needs. A more expensive pair of binoculars will generally be more robust and are able to withstand longer term use.

Aidan James asked:

As any optics worker will tell you they are often asked to recommend the best binoculars for different needs and frequently it is the birders (bird watchers) who do the asking! To match the binocular to the birder it helps to first look at the needs of the birding enthusiast.

So what sort of optical demands must we consider? Well for one thing the birder need to see details like the patterns and colour of feathers, often in dim light such as under a tree canopy or in twilight. They need good magnification so that they can easily identify birds at a distance and sometimes they will want to observe birds at very short distances so they want their binoculars to work for close focus observing too, maybe even down to just a few meters.

They need true colour viewing so they can see everything as it really is coloured and not with any tint or false colour. They also need a reasonable field of view so they can observe birds in flight easily and be able to pick birds out from the surrounding trees.

They want the binoculars to be light enough to carry and hang on a neckstrap. Their binoculars should also be light enough to hold up comfortably for viewing and easy enough on the eyes to be able to use for long periods. Birders usually want their binoculars to be compact enough to pack in a rucksack. For observing from hides they often want to use their binoculars on a tripod or monopod so a fitting for these adapters is advisable. If their bird watching is in the wilderness then rugged construction and some element of waterproofing and fogproofing is also advisable.

When looking at binocular specifications we usually pay most attention to the two numbers that define the basic specs. The first number gives us the magnification factor, so an 8x binocular magnifies an image (brings it closer) by 8 times. The higher the magnification the more difficult it becomes to use the binoculars effectively due to the natural hand-shake effect, making it difficult to keep the bird in view and also the smaller the field of view will be. For birding use, an 8x binocular is the most commonly used though in some circumstances enthusiasts will use higher magnification.

The second number in the specs tells us the diameter of the objective lens. This is important for two reasons, firstly the larger the diameter the more light is captured by the binocular so the clearer and brighter the resulting image. Secondly, the larger diameter also gives a larger field of view. In the birding world, the most popular objectives 40mm and 42mm. Getting much higher than this makes the binocular a little too heavy for comfort.

The other important characteristics are the quality of the lenses and prisms and the optical coatings used on those elements. These coatings reduce loss of light through reflection back off the binocular and its internal components and help to preserve good clarity and true colour throughput. As a rule of thumb look for Fully-Multi-Coated (FMC) coatings for bird watching use. The specification for eye relief refers to the distance between the eyepiece and the eye at which the image is viewed. For those who wear glasses, they will need a longer eye relief to allow for the extra distance caused by the glasses being between the binocular and their eye.

Roof and Porro Prism designs refer to the two body styles of binoculars. This difference comes about through the placement of the internal prisms within the binocular body. Roof prism types are the more compact and modern looking. Their objective lenses are more or less in line with the eyepieces, while porro prism types are the traditional style with the lenses stepped out from the line of the eyepieces. More and more birding enthusiasts are now opting for the roof prism type particularly as their quality has caught up with the porro types in recent years.

Brian Schwartz asked:

Do you have kids that are curious, questioning, exploratory, and inquisitive? We should hone this skill whenever possible, and one positive way of doing that is to take interest in the great outdoors and everything that it has to offer. And one tool to help observation is a great pair of binoculars.

Now, we do not want to frustrate the child by having ill-fitting, inappropriate, or inadequate binoculars. So what are some appropriate choices? There are several binocular aspects you’ll need to consider.

First, make sure that they are age-appropriate for your child and that it is not too heavy, and composes clear images. If the set feels awkward, try another one. Ensuring a good fit in your child’s hands is crucial for long term enjoyment. It’s best to purchase a set with optics, which compose images that allows the child to easily recognize objects afar, e.g. an animal, butterfly or bird.

For a younger child (ages 4-8), consider the Audubon 7×18 mini. It is an affordable and versatile first binocular. They are bright and colorful and lots of fun! Kids from pre-school through the 3rd grade level will benefit most from this colorful piece; its size is compact enough that a child can easily hold it quite steady. It also has a wide field of view, and allows observation close up.

A good choice for 4th graders to junior high school kids would be the Vortex 8×32 Lightening, or even the 8×42 Vector binoculars by the Audubon company. The former is lightweight at just 17.4 oz, and has a great field of view of nearly 400 feet at a thousands yards; best of all, it’s both water proof and fog proof. It can be easily packed and stored (backpack or pouch), no matter where your adventures take you! The light full-sized Audubon is one that is also water proof and fog proof. It has the distinct advantage of allowing focus as near as 6 feet.

The Talon by the Stokes family is the best choice for those in high school. The Stokes name has been long associated with superiority for viewing afar and birding. The designers of a complete series of binoculars and spotting scopes, Mr. and Mrs. Stokes, are considered specialists in the birding field and the Talon binoculars are part of their intro models. It is strong, durable, fog and water proof, and full size. It provides clean, cool, crisp images due to the sophisticated and multi-coated lenses. The view is one of highest in the game, with over 400 feet field of view. You can also focus on images as close as four and a half feet. With these options, you can easily spot a bird afar or even a seasonal butterfly fluttering by. The possibilities are limitless.

The outdoors is meant to be discovered and enjoyed by the young and old alike. Experience the environment close up, with your family and friends, with your new set of binoculars. Binoculars can open up a door to a previously undiscovered world of nature and all that it has to offer. Take time to choose the right set of binoculars for your child, and start enjoying the wonders of the natural world.

Brian Schwartz asked:

Do you own a set of binoculars? If you don’t, you’re missing out on a lot of fun. Binoculars allow you to see things up close and give you the chance to feel as if you could actually reach out and touch birds or even the stars. And if you love birds, a good set of binoculars is just what you need to capture some of nature’s most fascinating creatures; a popular activity is bird watching, where birdwatchers often look form afar so as to not scare away their entertainment.

Binoculars are designed mainly for use to view objects at a distance. Thus, stargazing and spotting prey afar are other fun uses, so a set of binoculars is a great companion to bring along when enjoying the outdoors. Amateur astronomers can quickly look at stars — although a telescope would be more effective, you can use binoculars to enjoy the moon’s craters and on clear nights, even the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. This could really be an exciting activity for children.

In fact, even during a solar eclipse (though these don’t occur too often), you can glimpse at it with your binoculars. Because it’s dangerous for your eyes, you should avoid looking directly at it, however, by projecting the eclipse onto a flat surface, it can really help you to view it enlarged.

Of course, anyone who has used a binocular knows that looking through binoculars through the “wrong end” makes objects seem small and distant. This is only true of objects more than a couple of inches away. Because of the lenses of the binoculars, objects fewer than a couple of inches away will be magnified. Objects that you can physically go close to can be magnified many fold so that you can see every detail of the object with greater resolution than you would be able to if you looked at it through the “right end” of the binocular. For those who like to have fun marching to a different drummer, this is a great way to enjoy looking at flowers and other close-by objects.

Whether you have a binoculars hobby such as bird watching, prey spotting and hunting activities, or just love gazing into the outer space, there are different binoculars to best suit your needs. Ranging from compact travel size to the sophisticated high quality ones, bringing one along prior to setting out for your camping trip, class field trip event, or having one handy on a quiet beautiful night, will ensure that you won’t miss out on any of the fun.

Paul Watson asked:

For the newcomer to stargazing or indeed planet gazing, a good pair of binoculars are a major step up from scanning the skies with the unaided eye.

You will be able to develop your astronomical ability by looking at stars, viewing planets and locating constellations before going to the relative expense of purchasing a telescope.

There are many benefits to using binoculars for stargazing.

* The cost, good binoculars can be a lot less expensive than a telescope
* They are much easier to handle and use for a less experienced skywatcher. They are smaller, lighter and don’t require any setting up.
* Binoculars provide a much larger field of view than the vast majority of telescopes. This makes finding objects easier. This is one of the biggest challenges faced by the beginner.
* Locating constellations, and observing comets is much easier with binoculars, as you can scan a lot of the sky quickly.
* Binoculars have lots of other uses and so you will get value from your purchase.

As well as your binoculars you will also need an astronomy sky chart to help you find your way around the skies.

A red flashlight is also handy. This allows you to look at your charts or any books you may have with out ruining your night vision. If you can’t purchase a red torch, just cover a normal white light torch with red cellophane.

If you have developed your sky watching skills with your unaided eyes, you will find it a lot easier to pick things out using binoculars. Planet gazing will be within reach with binoculars too.

A visit to your local library will be very beneficial. Try to find a book that will show what a certain planet or object will look through binoculars.

Also remember that when going out on a clear night for a spot of sky watching that the temperature can soon drop. So always wrap up warm.

If you have decided to use a large pair of binoculars, you may find a tripod with a binocular mount a great help.

It isn’t much fun finding a planet or constellation and then having the views ruined by your trembling hands.

A notebook is another good thing to carry. You can the write down and make notes about the things you have seen.

As with all things, the internet is absolutely fantastic for finding information about astronomy, and a quick Google will yield enough results and reading material to feed your hungry brain for a long time.

But even if your interest in astronomy only runs to learning the names of the stars in the sky,
a nice, small and compact pair of binoculars make stargazing and planet viewing more interesting.

Take a look at my binocular discount centre below and happy viewing.

Paul Maxey asked:

Whether you’re a beginning amateur astronomer or a seasoned veteran, if you’re not using binoculars for astronomy you’re most certainly missing out. I’ve enjoyed stargazing with binoculars for many years and, during that time, have evaluated many different types of binoculars. While being an amateur astronomer can bring with it a high cost of entry, it doesn’t have to if you approach your new hobby appropriately from the beginning.

The truth is, many phenomena in the night sky can be seen with minimal equipment and even with the naked eye. In fact, a good pair of binoculars can take you a long way before you even begin to consider buying a telescope. One of the main advantages I’ve found over the years with binocular astronomy, as opposed to the traditional telescope, is the sharpness and clarity. By viewing with both eyes simultaneously, you can see as much as 35-40% more detail than you can with a telescope.

When it comes to astronomy, binoculars can be used primarily for locating objects in the night sky, for viewing them, or both. Each application requires a different set of priorities when determining the binocular specifications. That said, here are several factors you should consider:

* 1) Mounting: Your first priority for viewing the night sky is whether you will hold them or mount them on a tripod. Binoculars that will primarily be hand held should be lighter. This generally means they will have less magnification, but they will also have a larger field of view, allowing you to view more of the sky at one time. Mounted binoculars can have a much larger objective lenses, meaning much higher magnification. But, this naturally means a smaller field of view. Another consideration is that binoculars mounted on a tripod will provide greater image detail than binoculars that are wobbly and constantly trying to maintain focus on distant objects.

* 2) Aperture: You can use virtually any binoculars for an occasional look at the night sky. But, binoculars with large objectives (50mm and larger) are much better suited for more serious astronomical purposes than their smaller and more compact relatives due to their greater light-gathering ability. Nothing quite compares to viewing celestial objects through a pair of giant astronomy binoculars. The view is much wider than that of a telescope allowing large objects, such as nebulas and entire galaxies, to fit in their field of view. Keep in mind also that the older you are, the less likely it is that your eye pupils will be able to open to larger exit pupils. Hence, 7×50 binoculars (7 mm exit pupil) may not be appropriate for you. Your best bet may be to try 10×50 (5 mm exit pupil).

* 3) Magnification: Once you begin looking at binoculars with a magnification of 10x and higher, they can get heavy very quickly, making for an incredibly shaky image. Again, consider mounting them on a tripod so you can go for a larger magnification.

* 4) Lens coatings: Lenses are coated to improve light transmission through the lenses. Binoculars that are not coated can lose as much as 50 percent of the light that enters them. Frankly, there’s no excuse for anything less than “fully multi-coated” (FMC) for astronomy. This simply means that all air-to-glass surfaces are coated multiple times. With multi-coating now featured on very low-grade binoculars it is very inexpensive.

* 5) Eye relief: If you wear eyeglasses, you’ll want to find binoculars with the proper eye relief. Many models provide long eye relief, allowing you to see the complete field of view with or without eyeglasses.

* 6) Field of view: This is how much of the sky you can see through the binoculars at any one time. Most that offer extremely wide views do so by compromising the quality of the image. A wider field of view can also be obtained with more expensive eyepieces.

As is evident from the above, not all binoculars are suitable for stargazing. As with anything, you must find the right balance of features and price for you. But knowing your options in advance will greatly aide you in finding the best pair of binoculars for you or the budding astronomer in your family to enjoy the wonders of space and science.

Rich Russell asked:

Digital camera binoculars are a cool item to buy as a gift for the gadget freak who has everything. But are the just for people who have to leap on the latest technology, whatever it happens to be, or could they serve some purpose for the rest of us? First, what are they? Simply, they are binoculars with a digital camera built in.

So why would you want them? Well, binoculars in themselves have come very much into the mainstream. A quick search online will turn up dozens of retailers selling vast range of them from manufacturers you will have heard of and probably some that you haven’t. Somebody must be buying them and how many technology geeks can there be?

Binoculars do have many uses in the real world. You may find pleasure in sailing, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, bird watching, astronomy, or watching sports or other outdoor events. A pair of binoculars can add a new dimension to any of these pastimes. If it’s good to be in the great outdoors or at a great event, isn’t it better to be able to see it up close and personal. To zoom right in and see details that are normally unavailable to you.

Camera binoculars can to take it a stage further. If you do happen to get a breathtaking view in your lenses, a magical wildlife moment or a climactic point in a sporting event, now you can preserve the memory forever. Imagine catching a killer whale momentarily breaking the waves. Instead of telling your friends about it, you would be able to show them.

What are these camera binoculars all about? Most people are familiar with the general principle of binoculars if not the details. They enable you to bring distant objects up close and into focus. And digital cameras are insanely cheap these days, to the point where you can pick up a pretty good one from the supermarket while you shop for your groceries. There must be few people who don’t own them or haven’t used them.

What do you get when you put them together and how much does it cost? Binoculars themselves come in many varieties and from cheap to frighteningly expensive. Camera binoculars, surprisingly, tend to come in at the cheaper end of the market. One reason for this is that the binocular technology is usually not at the cutting edge. The magnification is in the low to medium range, not the sort of thing that the dedicated bird watcher is likely to buy.

Similarly, while digital cameras with 10 megapixel resolution are now becoming very affordable, the best you are likely to find in a camera binocular is half of that. And many come with much lower resolution, probably less than you would have in your camera phone. So why does that matter? A 4 megapixel camera will produce very high quality images. It depends what you want to do with them.

If you want to print your images, low resolution will limit the quality and the size of the images you are able to produce. Personally, I believe that the main advantage of digital images is that you don’t have to print them. I have seen far more of my images on a computer screen than I ever did when they were printed and stuck away in a cupboard somewhere.

Let’s look at a practical example. This is not intended as a product review, just an indication of what is available. I have chosen the Bushnell Imageview 8×30 with 5MP camera to take a look at. For those not familiar with binoculars, Bushnell is a respected manufacturer. The 8 in the title refers to 8 times magnification. In other words an object would appear 8 times closer than if seen with the naked eye. The 30 refers to the diameter in millimetres of the front lenses which influences the amount of light that enters.

The camera is 5 megapixel and has a 1.5 inch pop up screen. It has 16mb of flash memory built in and this can be expanded with an SD card up to 2 GB. The camera also has 8 times magnification. I would regard a 5MP camera as perfectly acceptable but I have read reviews claiming it to be woefully inadequate. That’s gadget freaks for you.

In a nutshell, for what is regarded as a compact, pocket sized binocular, this unit will perform pretty well, producing good, crisp images. At the time of writing, this model is on sale for just under $175. Not outrageously expensive, I’m sure you’ll agree.

So do digital camera binoculars have applications for those of us who are not busy chasing the latest techie trends? I think that they could enhance a lot of outdoor activities, adding to the fun and preserving the memories.

Gary Hatcher asked:

Binoculars allow you to see some unbelievable views. Whether you are at a game or hiking, binoculars can be very handy. In the past, most binoculars were used by adults. Today, there are binoculars for kids. These can be a lot of fun and are very easy for kids to use. Most kids want them because of their interest in nature or the outdoors.

A child who is interested in nature will be best served with binoculars that have a larger field of view and larger objective lenses. For the child that is interested in viewing sports games, they will require a smaller objective lenses and lower magnification. A good range of magnification in binoculars for kids is 7-8X.

Binoculars for kids should be light and streamlined to fit the contour of their faces. If they are too heavy or too large, it can cause instability and result in poorer viewing. Make sure they have a no-slip grip and are shockproof and waterproof.

Compact binoculars usually are better for smaller kids while older kids can use the same binoculars that an adult would use. Compact binoculars are easier for kids to change the focus knob. Even though older kids can use the same binoculars that adults use, many prefer the compact binoculars because it is more accommodating for their active lifestyle.

Some things to consider when purchasing Binoculars For Kids!

Do the binoculars fit comfortably?

Are they made of sturdy material?

Can the child easily change the focus knob on the binoculars?

What is the magnification?

Should you get high powered or low powered binoculars?

What viewing range will work best for the binoculars for kids?

Nature observation is a great way to accelerate a child’s intellectual growth. Binoculars for kids enhances this growth and encourages a child’s well being. By observing wildlife, it teaches children to love and learn an appreciation for the outdoors. There is nothing better than watching a child view things with his binoculars while his father is doing the same thing. Like father, like son!

Terry Ross asked:

The task of buying binoculars, UK or otherwise isn’t easy to say the least but one way of simplifying the process is by buying from online stores where searching for specific functionality is so much easier than on the high street.

Making the decision to invest in binoculars is the easy part but once you take those first tentative steps towards buying binoculars you soon learn that the process isn’t as simple as it seems. There’s an amazing amount of choice, numerous top quality binocular manufacturers, hundred’s of different types and sizes on offer (waterproof, IS binoculars (image stabilising), compact, lightweight, marine, bird watching binoculars, the list is endless) and a decision to be made regarding such things as magnification, objective diameter, lens quality and eye relief.

One of the biggest problems with buying binoculars in the UK is that there is so much choice it’s hard to make a decision and when you start to realise the whole new world that binoculars give you access to you tend to want to go for the best money can buy (which can get expensive).

Buying binoculars, is a minefield, be prepared to follow a few guidelines before you start:

Be clear about what you are buying binoculars for. You can buy binoculars for general use, many of which are very good but if you are looking for astronomy binoculars for example and you want the best quality viewing it’s best to opt for specialist binoculars, particular given UK weather conditions.

If you want to use your binoculars in wet, salty, environments then search for marine binos which will be waterproof, fog-free and built for extreme weather conditions. The best marine binoculars are also corrosion resistant.

A lot of binoculars aren’t waterproof and in nice hot climates this isn’t an issue. For UK residents, when buying binoculars, UK weather conditions have to be taken into account, given the number of wet or damp days we have are none waterproof binoculars going to provide you with the flexibility you need?

Do you want to be able to use high magnification binos without a tripod? If so you may want to consider buying IS binoculars (image stabilising) which will eliminate the distortion caused by slight movements in your hand normally apparent with high magnification binoculars. If you’re purchasing binoculars to use in a moving vehicle then IS binoculars are ideal.

Are you looking to travel, UK and abroad, consider compact binoculars. They are light enough and small enough to carry around wherever you go maximising the use you get out of them.
Unless you are going to use a tripod or IS binoculars look at buying binoculars that have a magnification of 10x or less. Anything higher and you start to get image distortion due to slight movements in your hand. The Canon 10×42L IS Binoculars are a popular choice.

If you want to take your binoculars out and about all day, weight could be important. Lightweight binoculars are worth looking at with modern materials enabling a significant weight reduction even in full-size binoculars.

In the UK we have some wonderful wildlife which shouldn’t be missed, for the best quality viewing try and buy binoculars with high quality Bak-4 prisms and fully multicoated lenses.
o uncoated lenses give extremely poor quality viewing, not recommended
o coated lenses is one coat and isn’t necessarily all lenses
o fully coated is one coat all lenses

If you wear glasses or for comfortable all day viewing look at buying binoculars with long eye relief (15mm and above).

Rubber armoured binoculars tend to be more robust.

One final tip for buying binoculars is that price doesn’t guarantee quality but it is worth paying a bit more if you want good quality lenses and an unforgettable viewing experience.
