Roy Smallwood asked:

With the beginning of Spring Migration it is time to consider investing in new binoculars. This is a proposition that can present itself in daunting ways. Careful consideration needs to be made whether a new birder or one who has spent some time in the field and acquired some expertise. The optics field is quite large and the number of products is considerable. How does one choose a binocular? Here are my suggestions.

First, determine just how and under what circumstances you will be using your new binoculars. If you are going to be walking then full size binoculars are certainly worth your consideration. However, if you are a backpacker or will be doing your birding on a bicycle, then you may wish to consider mid size or even compact binoculars. If you bird by sitting in a favorite spot, then larger binoculars could be your choice. Size matters when one considers the mode of birding. Size is dictated by the objective lens. Generally, if the objective lens is 50 mm then it is considered to be a large binocular; if it is 42 mm, it is full size; if it is 32 mm, it is a mid size. Finally, compacts have objective lenses 25 mm or less.

The size of the binocular will probably affect the way they feel in your hands. One should consider the ergonomics of one’s choice. In other words, does the model you are examining have the right heft? Do you feel comfortable while holding the binoculars to your eyes?

Coupled with the size of the objective is the light gathering ability of the lens and the field of view. Of course, the larger lenses tend to gather more light. The more important consideration should be the field of view. Those new to the game should consider obtaining a pair of binoculars that posses a large field of view. Field of view is often stated in feet viewable at 1000 yards. For example, the Vortex Diamondback has one of the largest field of view for its size lens, 420 ft. at 1000 yards.

One of the most significant advances in optics is in water and fog proofing. This has been accomplished in two ways. The first of which is changing the prism design. Roof prism binoculars are so much easier to water and fog proof because of internal focusing. The older porro prism design has external focusing and, therefore, is not easily water or fog proofed. The other facet to proofing is the gas used to purge the binocular.
Two gases are currently being used, nitrogen and argon.

Nitrogen and oxygen, if you remember, are the major components of air. Oxygen is the active ingredient while nitrogen is not. This basic chemistry is the reason for choosing nitrogen as the purging agent in many models. However, the real advancement is in the use of argon. The Argon Binocular is the newest class of binoculars. Argon is a member of the Noble Gases. Noble Gases were at one time called the Inert Gases because of their inability to react. In fact, they are so unreactive that it was not until the 20th Century that they were even discovered. The point is that argon is now being used because it does not attack the o-rings and seals in the binocular, thus allowing for excellent water and fog proofing and extending the life of your binocular.

One more word…in my opinion, one should be prepare to purchase a binocular worthy of your endeavors. Spend the money on a pair of binoculars that you can afford. Do not waste your hard earned cash on a pair of cheap ones. This advice is given in much the same vein as buying all the house you can afford. Let’s face it; you are going to possess these binoculars for a long time. You want to be able to see the bird with clarity and ease. You want to become adept at identifying a bird correctly. So, you must be able to see it in all conditions, including some adverse situations. Your willingness to increase your budget will often provide you with a return in performance of your purchase.

These tips hopefully will lend themselves to your benefit. Enjoy your new binoculars and spend as much time as you can in the field.

Create a video blog…instantly.

Jason Perdix asked:

Things that come in children’s sizes are smaller than similar objects made for adults. Binoculars that are easy for children to use are smaller, lightweight versions of adult-sized binoculars. Yes, they actually make binoculars for children.

Size is the most obvious thing that you’ll notice about children’s binoculars. Of course they’re smaller than adult ones. Little hands must be able to grasp them or hold on to them. Larger binoculars are just too big for small people to use. You have to be able to hold on to the binocular tubes and control the focusing knob at the same time. Children would have a tough time operating 8×32s or 10×42s due to this factor alone. Less powerful binoculars, say 7×25s, might be able to be used by older kids.

Weight of the binocular is also a factor to consider. As adults we want lightweight binoculars so that we can hold them up to our eyes for long periods of time without having the darn things shake. If a binocular is too heavy, or if your arms get fatigued, it will be practically impossible to hold them steady. If you can’t hold them steady, then you won’t be able to see with them very well. Children’s binoculars are necessarily lightweight.

Children’s binoculars are made of plastic. Plastic housing, plastic lenses and internal parts are all made cheaply compared to adult versions. This makes sense to anyone who has witnessed a child destroy a toy the first time they play with it. Of course, they often don’t set out to destroy the thing, it just happens.

Children have a way of playing with everything, so when they use a pair of binoculars they will think it’s a toy. After all they’re having fun, right? Why let them use a more expensive binocular if they don’t understand the need to properly take care of it? Good binoculars will last decades if they are treated with respect and kept clean and dry.

Why not just let the child have your old binoculars? That’s quite alright providing that the binoculars actually fit the child. One last thing, and it’s a major thing, that is different about children’s binoculars is the interpupil distance. That is, the distance between the eyepieces. Adult binoculars are typically too wide for a child’s smaller face. Adult binoculars have a hinge apparatus so that they can be adjusted to fit adults with different face shapes. The interpupil distance can be easily changed just by grasping the binoculars and moving the tubes closer or further apart. So, the adult ones can be made smaller, but not small enough to fit most children.

So, when you take a child outdoors on a hike or to a game, spend a little time to show them how to use their binoculars. If they get a little coaching and understand how to use them, they will enjoy using binoculars for a long time.

Create a video blog…instantly.

James Cleary asked:

Compact Nikon binoculars are the handiest and most versatile of all optical instruments I have trialled. For those people who spend a lot of time outdoors I highly recommend you try them out.

If you are the type of person who does a lot of walking or traveling with their binoculars, then an ideal choice is a compact pair of binoculars. They are lightweight, portable, and very easy to carry. In my opinion they are the best choice in terms of value for the money, and the have the added benefit of being ergonomically designed.

The Nikon range of compact binoculars is extensive and will have a pair to suit your needs. These may be sporting (watching your favorite team from the stands), hunting (they won’t weigh you down or take much space), birdwatching (you can hold them steady for long periods without tiring), or just everyday nature lovers. There are even pairs that are filled with nitrogen and waterproof models.

Some of the brilliant user friendly features of compact binoculars is that they have a very small objective lens, and they can be folded to fit in your pocket or a small pouch. You must ensure that your binoculars have a good quality coating on the lenses. This coating reduces glare and protects your eyes from UV rays, and increases the definition and clarity of an object. Remember you get what you pay for, so ensure you buy a good quality pair to prevent disappointment in the field.

It is a real treat for kids to go on nature walks or hikes with their parents, however we all remember how heavy the binoculars were for us as kids, right. Compact binoculars are an ideal first pair for children, they are easy to use and lightweight which means the kids get more enjoyment out of their outdoor activities, and spend less time moaning about having to hold those heavy old things your dad gave you.

Create a video blog…instantly.

Daryl Plaza asked:

Digital Camera Binoculars| Taking Digital cameras to a new level of photo imaging

Taking pictures while bird watching is one of the many fun activities that bird enthusiasts engage in as they get closer to nature. Digital camera binoculars will allow you to not only find your favorite bird species but to get digital photos at the same time.

This type of binocular provides high-quality images, they are quite compact and come with high-quality optics that provide superior picture taking ability. Digital camera binoculars are the latest in innovation where technology makes it possible to not just look, but keep a visual record of your adventures.

Camera binoculars come in both spotting scopes and night vision varieties and allow you to download your images onto the desktop or laptop computer. The digital camera binocular combos are used both by professional as well as recreational users.

Camera binoculars are digital so you don’t need to fuss with film or wait for pictures to be developed. Simply download and view your images immediately on your computer or use the digital LCD screen that comes with the binoculars for a small preview. The LCD screen is a instant preview so you can replay the events you’ve recorded and delete the ones you don’t want.

Live video is also possible on many binoculars and gives you about 20 seconds or more of live video so that you aren’t limited to still shots. This is top of the line binocular technology and has been in high demand since they were introduced. The combination of binocular and digital camera sells for less than if you bought each piece separately and makes a very positive addition to your birdwatching pursuits.

Finding the best digital camera binoculars

There are a few major manufacturers who provide the best digital camera binoculars on the market today including Barska, Bushnell, Meade and Celestron. These companies are noted for providing high-quality digital camera binoculars at the best prices on the market today. They strive for optical excellence and manufacture very good products.

Avid sports people who don’t want to miss a moment of the action choose from these companies knowing that they will capture the view and action at a moment’s notice. Combining birding binoculars with a camera is a great way to record all the bird sightings that you encounter.

The number of pictures and video clips will depend, not on the memory of the camera, but the size of the flash card utilized. The minimum size on the market today is 64 meg; however, today flash cards are so cheap, you might want to invest a few bucks in a 1 gig card. You can always carry a extra photo memory card in your accessory bag as well.

There are two main features you should be on the watch for when researching digital camera binoculars – objective lens size and magnification power. Objective lens size will determine your field of view and magnification power and should be at least 7x, 8x or 10x. You will want to check and determine if the digital camera is well made and that it has features like good resolution; a clear display LCD and a video capture option. You’ll also want to look into whether your prospective purchase is tripod-ready for pictures and video recording.

Digital camera binocular tips

Whether you finally decided on the standard-sized or compact binoculars, there are a few things to consider so that you get the best results. Go for the best that you can afford and think of it as an investment that will last a long time. Don’t go for the least expensive or you may regret it in the future. Try out different types and research in places like Consumer Reports online for digital camera binocular reviews. Get a feel for each of them as they will be yours for a while and figure out your personal preferences.

Try to find binoculars that are both lightweight, durable and water resistant because you are engaging in an outside activity. Remember that the environment and terrain may be rugged while you are taking photographs. You’ll want the optics of the camera catches delicate details and minute colors with a good degree of accuracy.

Speed of focus is essential when bird watching because you’ll be capturing quick shots, zooming in and out and it would be very helpful if you can zoom in on your subject. Camera binoculars should also work well in low light as well as regular and bright light situations. Special digital binoculars are a piece of sensitive equipment, and should be protected with accessories from lens caps to carrying cases. Always keep the binoculars on a strap around your neck to avoid accidental dropping as well.

Benefits and features of digital camera binoculars

Take your time in choosing a pair of digital camera binoculars. There are several different makes, models and styles with optional specs that you can add to your camera. That’s why you’ll want to do your research prior to purchase. All binoculars are great for bird watching, hiking, boating and hunting; however, you’ll want to take that extra step to get the right pair for you. It all depends on your personal preferences when it comes to buying a pair of digital camera binoculars. So take your time.

Create a video blog

Jason Perdix asked:

Lightweight and easy to carry are two features that you should look for when considering which compact binoculars are for you. This brings up a good point. What do you want binoculars for anyway?

Will you take binoculars with you outdoors to view nature while on a hike or to watch birds? What about hunting, boating, or using binoculars at stadium events like concerts? Maybe you’d like to take a small pair of binoculars with you when you travel. There are many different uses for binoculars, so it makes sense to get the type of binoculars that are best suited for your use. Often times, people will carry an inexpensive pair of binoculars in the glove-box of their vehicle or backpack just in case they see something of interest while they’re out and about.

Since binoculars can be very expensive to risk taking with you on the trail, you’ll probably want to find binoculars that are not too expensive. After all if you’re going to take them into the field you don’t want to risk losing them. The price of binoculars runs from less than $100 on the cheap end all the way up to a few thousand dollars. Figure out your budget first.

After price, look at size. Size does matter! If you are going to take the binoculars on a trip, perhaps you’d do well with a light travel size. Going on a hike, but don’t want to be slowed down? Try a compact size instead of full size. There are no hard rules on size categories, but be aware that modern binoculars have brighter optics and better prisms which makes today’s compact binoculars rival older full-size ones.

Heavy binoculars are not good for field work, unless you want to take a tripod with you. In the case where you can take a tripod, there are wonderful spotting scopes that you can use to view waterfowl and game from a distance. Many spotting scopes are in the higher price range because they are larger than binoculars that you generally wear around your neck. Heavy in this case may mean only 1.5 pounds, but after a couple hours swinging from your neck they can seem a lot heavier.

If you are more interested in small, lightweight binoculars, let’s take a look at the features that will help you choose. You can’t go wrong with the Triumph 10 x 25 from Eagle Optics. It is a Porro prism design that weighs in at 10.2 oz. Lighter than a bottle of water, these binoculars won’t bother you when you hang them around your neck, even on a long hike.

Wearing glasses isn’t a problem with these small binoculars either. The eye relief is 18 mm so there is plenty of room for those who use glasses to see the entire field of view.

When you want to see something up close, you can focus as close as 8.2 feet away. Many small binoculars will not be able to match that close focus. This goes back to our question above. What do you want to use the binoculars for? If you want to view insects and butterflies, you can get within ten feet and be able to view them as if you’re holding them in your hand! On the opposite end of the spectrum the field of view at 1000 yards is 262 feet. Although it’s not waterproof the Triumph Porro is a great little field binocular. If you want to take your binoculars boating or fishing, it would be wise to spend a little more for a waterproof and fog-proof model.

So, how many features did we cover? Magnification, objective lens diameter, weight, eye relief, close focus, field of view, waterproof and fog-proof. If you compare the specs of several binoculars you’ll see that many of these parameters vary between brands and sizes of binoculars. How are you supposed to pick one?

The best answer is to start at the beginning and answer the question, What do I want to use these binoculars for? Once you get a clear picture of the situations where you envision yourself using the binoculars, then you can be confident that you’ll buy the best compact binoculars for you.

compact binoculars

Cassaundra Flores asked:

Perhaps the most inexpensive binoculars right now are Magnacraft binoculars. For a few dollars you can have a binocular of your own. Nothing can be more enjoyable than seeing things more clearly as it enables us to appreciate better the beautiful things in life. Spectacular things are far more spectacular when they are seen closer. Binoculars are very useful especially during excursions. It adds more color and spirit to one’s life.

Most of the Magnacraft Binoculars are of smaller sizes compared to the traditional binoculars. Although there are big and high power binoculars, most people prefer the more popular smaller ones because they can easily be carried when going out.
James Cleary asked:

Binoculars are used for so many activities these days, from bird watching, and star gazing, to checking out your favourite sports team or opera. Whatever you are going to use your for it is important that you get the pair that best suits your needs. Below are three of the most important points to consider when you go shopping for your next pair of binoculars.

1)	Decide which magnification you need. This is very important as you want to make sure that you can see your objects in good detail. However, it is not always best to go for high magnifications, as any small shakes or hand movements will become more obvious. Most binoculars range from 7-12 times magnification, but you should think about getting a tripod if you decide to go over 10 times.

2)	You will then need to decide what diameter objective you require. Generally speaking it is good to get a pair of binoculars with an objective diameter about 5 times the magnification. So if you wanted a pair with 7 times magnification you would go for an objective diameter of 35, these are generally termed as 7×35, or 8×40 etc. The objective diameter basically controls how bright the object is that you are looking at, so the bigger the diameter, the brighter the object. One important point to keep in mind is that increasing the size of the objective generally increases the weight and size of the binoculars. Compact binoculars are generally of a smaller magnification and smaller objective.

3)	The coating on the lenses of your binoculars is also very important. This is responsible for reducing the amount of fragmented and reflected light inside your binoculars. Through this the object you are looking at becomes brighter and clearer. There are generally four different types of lens coating that you will come across when looking at purchasing a pair of binoculars, they are, fully multi coated (being the best), then fully coated, multi coated, and lastly coated.

When you go to purchase your binoculars keep these three points in mind. It is vital before you talk to a salesman that you have a very good idea of what you want and need, or you run the risk of being sold a pair of binoculars that do not do what you want them to.

Create a video blog…instantly.

Jason Perdix asked:

We usually rely on binoculars for viewing distant objects, so it seems a little contradictory to be concerned about the close focus of binoculars.

Close focus is simply how close you can get to the object you’re viewing before it goes out-of-focus. Larger binoculars have close focus on the order of 15-20 feet or more. This means that any object viewed with these binoculars must be 20 feet or so away in order to view it with the binoculars. Any object closer than the close focus distance will be seen out-of-focus and quite blurry. Smaller binoculars will have smaller close focus distances, on the order of 15 feet or less.

If you want to be able to use your binoculars for viewing butterflies or other cool insects, you’ll want a pair of binoculars that have a small close focus. For example, if you see a butterfly that is 8 feet away, a pair of 10×25 binoculars – with a close focus of 9.8 feet – will make you take a step back to view the butterfly in focus and risk startling your subject. A better choice, although not as powerful for distant objects, might be a pair of 8×22 binoculars – with a better close focus of 6.6 feet.

If you’ll often find yourself viewing such small objects up close, then the close focus is a feature that you should consider when selecting your binoculars. Be aware that the close focus of compact binoculars ranges from 6 feet to 28 feet.

Wearing glasses can interfere with the use of binoculars. One has to leave a little bit of room for their glasses in between their eyes and the eyepieces of the binoculars or the eyeglass-wearing person will not see all that the binoculars has to offer. You have to hold the binoculars further away from your face when wearing glasses. If you have to hold the binoculars too far away, then you will not see the whole picture. Instead, you will see the center of the circle as viewed through the binoculars.

Eye relief of the right distance helps glass-wearers use binoculars successfully. Eye relief is a term that is used when describing binoculars. Eye relief is the maximum distance in millimeters (mm) that you can hold the binoculars away from your eyes and still see the whole view.

A rule of thumb is that a pair of compact binoculars should have a minimum eye relief of 13 mm for eyeglass wearers to use comfortably. Even if you don’t wear corrective lenses, you might want to consider the eye relief of binoculars if you regularly wear sunglasses in the field. An eye relief of 16 to 18 mm is even better for those wearing glasses.

The more you explore the features of binoculars, you will find out that there are trade-offs to be made. For example, a roof prism 8×22 binoculars might have a close focus of 6.6 feet, which is really great for viewing butterflies, bugs and other objects up close. Inexpensive models often have smaller eye relief distances, like 10 mm. Not good enough for eyeglass-wearers. Contrast that with more expensive models that can have eye relief of 20 to 28 mm. The extra cost is probably worth it for the eyeglass wearer.

Compare all the features before you put down any money for a pair of binoculars. Remember to consider what you will use the binoculars for and your budget, too.

Kansieo.com

Uttoran Sen asked:

Also called field glasses, binoculars are like a couple of telescopes put together and pointed at a similar area. Unlike a monocular, it is easier to perceive depth thanks to the two lenses of binoculars.

Binoculars are not exactly a new invention since man has been using it for the past couple of centuries. When the telescope was invented, people began to look through telescopes mounted side by side.

In the 18th century a prism kind of binoculars came out, enabling greater perception as the eyepieces were spaced wider.

Porro prisms are the most inexpensive types, allowing bright images. These are also precise instruments, since the binoculars are wider, although they also need to be re-aligned.

The roof prism binocular, on the other hand, is an expensive type. It is smaller and narrower, although it losses some of the brightness. However there is no need to realign the binoculars. Optical coating is used for this type of binoculars.

This is a great feature among binoculars, as optical coating helps in creating a brighter image through the reduction in the amount of light reflected. Images are often seen hazy when there is reflected light inside binoculars.

There are also other types of binoculars like general binoculars, which are focused through movement of a round wheel, which in turn focuses both telescopes. More advanced types make use of independent focus; meaning one has to adjust both sides separately.

There are binoculars, which make use of image stabilization technology preventing sudden movement. The binoculars can be turned off or on by the user. High-powered binoculars are also handheld, although the image quality leaves a lot to be desired. The prices are also steep.

In most tourist destinations, binoculars appear in coin-operated machines allowing tourists a more detailed sight of the tourist attractions. Most of these coin-operated binoculars are placed on a pedestal, and they are normally high powered.

Binoculars are also used by military personnel. Military binoculars are hand held, with a magnification of at least 5 to 7 times of the image. The typical military binocular is far tougher and rugged compared to other binoculars. They also boast of other features like the capability to work even when wet and capability of blocking out laser beams

Those who are interested in viewing stars and planets would need an astronomical binocular. Pluto, Uranus, and Eris can be viewed using astronomical binoculars.

Create a video blog

Terry Ross asked:

Before answering the question ‘what are the best binoculars (UK)’ I need to make it very clear that a good pair of binoculars is something you can and should get really passionate about. The best binoculars bring distant images to life with amazing resolution and clarity making you feel as if you are part of a completely new and exciting world.

Imagine being able to see every little detail of what you are viewing with absolutely perfect contrast and clarity no matter where you are and what you are doing. If you experience such perfection you will become passionate and you’ll wonder how you ever lived without the very best binoculars. UK binoculars do vary from what is available in the US and the two environments are completely different so the best binoculars in the US may not be available in the UK or may not perform so well under the different environmental conditions.

You also have to consider that people’s opinions vary, sometimes quite dramatically, so what each person considers too be the best binoculars is probably not the same. Also, you need to be clear as to what you want to use the binoculars for, the best binoculars for astronomy won’t necessarily be much good for bird watching and the best sport binoculars won’t necessarily be very good as marine binoculars.

One thing that you need to look for in any binoculars is the quality of the lenses and prisms. The best binoculars come with fully multi-coated lenses and top quality Bak-4 prisms. Given the generally damp environment, the best binoculars for the UK, if you want to use them regularly outdoors, should be waterproof and fog-free to ensure a perfect viewing experience.

If you are looking for best marine binoculars in the UK then take a look at the Steiner Commander XP binoculars, they are amazingly high spec, waterproof to 10mtrs, nitrogen sealed with Steiner Nano-Protection (weather proof protection against the environment), high performance HD XP optics, long life rubber armouring and interchangeable eyecup system, truly professional marine binoculars which delivery an amazing performance in low light conditions and come with a 30 year guarantee.

For the best image stabilizing binoculars then look no further than the Canon IS Binoculars. I know I don’t stand alone when I say that once you own the Canon 10×42L IS binoculars you’ll wonder how you survived without them. Users absolutely rave about them. The lenses are just fantastic, they are the first binoculars to carry the red L-series ring only previously found on Canon professional camera lenses. These binoculars must come high up the list for the best binoculars, fully waterproof, unrivalled IS capabilities (in any moving environment), superb lens quality, close focus distance of just 2.5mtrs and long eye relief. The one main downside is perhaps weight (1030g) but to get the IS technology there always has to be a compromise regarding the weight.

Bushnell make great binoculars so in your search for the best binoculars for you take a look at the Bushnell Elite. Premium Bak-4 phase coated prisms, fully multi-coated lenses, waterproof, nitrogen sealed, rainguard lens coating and long eye relief. The new XTR technology utilises no less than 60 layers of coatings on each prism to deliver a combined 90% light transmission.

There are some great little compact binoculars to, one of my favourites is the Olympus RC I compact binoculars. Only 195g in weight, credit card size when folded, really stylish, high index Bak-4 prisms and multi-coated lenses.

When buying binoculars it all comes down to what you want to use them for and how much you are prepared to pay. Price doesn’t always denote quality and binoculars that are ideal for one activity aren’t necessarily good for another. Don’t however make the mistake of paying too little, finding they are useless and casting them aside. Top quality lenses do cost! No one can say what are the absolute best binoculars (UK) unless they know what the binoculars are to be used for and even then, as I said, its still a matter of opinion. Just watch out for the lens coatings and the quality of the prisms, make sure the weight suits you, don’t go for too high a magnification if the binoculars are to be hand held (unless you buy IS binoculars), for outdoors, in the UK, waterproof is usually best, if you are new to binoculars and looking to observe fast moving objects then go for binoculars with a wider field of view and if you wear glasses you want an eye relief of 15mm plus. Happy hunting for the best binoculars in the UK.

Create a video blog
